Jack Howard Oliver

April 02, 1917 - June 14, 2010

Jack Howard Oliver

Jack Howard Oliver, 93, died peacefully on June 14, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Savannah, Jack was raised on Whitemarsh Island, son to the late Agnes Theresa Smith and George Matthew Oliver. A childhood spent on Richardson Creek developed his love of the water that continued throughout his life.

Jack graduated from Clemson University in 1938 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He served during World War II as a Major in the US Army, Services of Supply, European Theater of Operations from 1941 to 1945. A strong interest in European military history developed from his time spent at Clemson University and serving in the Army.

Jack had many challenging and exciting careers. He worked at Union-Camp Corporation for 37 years from 1946 to 1983. After retiring, Jack worked at Herty Foundation for two years and as the manager of the Isle of Hope Marina for 10 years. The Isle of Hope Marina position was a dream come true stemming from his love of the water.

After retiring from the marina, Jack enjoyed several community positions and volunteer opportunities including: Motorpool manager for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Transportation Manager for NASCAR/Colonial Motorsport Group, Chatham County Board of Equalization, one of the founding members of the Tybee Light Power Squadron, Clean Coast of Georgia. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Isle of Hope for 42 years, enjoying many church roles such as layreader, chalice bearer, Jr. and Sr. Warden of the Vestry, and volunteer for the St Thomas Thrift store. Jack had a tremendous zest for the uncomplicated yet simple pleasures of life. All who knew him can attest to his unconditional love of his family and friends. Many also are aware of his love of Clemson sports, contagious smile and quiet selflessness.
